National Vessel Examination Q & A Page

We can only answer questions relating to federal requirements for recreational boats. Requirements that are state or local are best answered by the state or local agency, since we have no comprehensive, up-to-date database on those requirements and regulations. We cannot answer questions about requirements for commercial vessels and Uninspected Passenger Vesselss as they are not under our program for recreational boats.

Do not ask a question if it is already in our database. First search our database to see if we have already received and responded to a similar question from another member. To search the existing database of questions without scrolling, Click Here and search with the key words that may be found in your question.

To ask a question not found in our database, Click Here and if it is germane to the subject as listed above, and we can come up with an answer, it will be posted.

Paddle Sports on Public Site, posted: 12/26/2011

Question: I have paddle sports enthusiasts who visits our public site ask me if there is going to be more information about paddle sports on it. One even suggested having a virtual vsc for paddle sports like we have for power boats. I thought those were pretty good suggestions.

Answer: I will pass this along to the Paddle Sport people for consideration. The work is young and many new things will be coming.

MV Annual Qualifications, posted: 12/6/2011

Question: How many annual visits are required to maintain my returning visitor program qualification?

Answer: 1. Visits. To properly participate in the MV Program, visitors will be required to actively visit area marine dealers. The actual number of visits required to remain active will vary with location and the density of the marine population. The DSO-MV shall establish the district requirements but quarterly visits are a minimum. However, consideration of a marine dealer's needs may indicate additional visits are required. To remain qualified, a visitor must conduct at least four (4) visits annually.

2. Workshops. Each Auxiliarist who initially qualifies will be exempt from attending a required, approved, workshop during the qualifying calendar year. They must, however, attend any mandatory, Headquarters approved, MV/VE workshops conducted in their area. This keeps the visitors constantly updated on equipment requirements and program emphasis.

VSC Examiners Other Than CGA & USPS, posted: 12/1/2011

Question: On the Vessel Safety Check form 7012 the certification block has space for you to check if you are with the CGAUX, USPS,State of ____, or ______. My question is what is the process to establish other examiners and enable them to report their Safety checks. An example might be non-law enforcement harbor masters.

Answer: The box means what what state is the exam performed in. It is not a solicitation to add other classes of people to the examiner base. CGAUX and the PS are the only two in the program to date. There are no plans to change that.
